Have You Ever Done This?

Homeschooling mommies, have you ever done this?

It’s been one of those days.  The baby’s having a growth spurt and wants to nurse all day.  Something got spilled – doesn’t matter what it is: sugar, flour, eggs, syrup or honey or juice (oh my!) – and it took you three hours to get it cleaned up with all the interruptions.

You really wanted to fix a nice, healthy dinner, but after nursing the baby for the fifteenth time you find it’s 6 pm, nothing’s thawed, and you’re wondering what your husband will think if you call and ask him to pick up pizza on his way home.

You started some laundry that morning but never got the clothes any further than the washing machine.  Home-schooling that day amounted to your first grader reading a book to you that you know he/she already had memorized.

I could go on but you get the point…it’s been “one of those days!”

After you feed the kids pizza :), get them bathed and into bed, you just feel as if you accomplished nothing all day.  Then you start to think about how many of those days you actually have.  You start to wonder if you’re in some kind of time or energy warp like in a science fiction movie where everyone else is moving around and accomplishing things and you are just…stuck.  (Or maybe you feel like you’re in your own version of “Groundhog Day!”)

Sometimes, when I’ve had one of those days, I would do something that I am wondering if you have ever done.  No, I didn’t consume a quart of ice cream (though with all that nursing it probably wouldn’t have mattered!)

No, what I am talking about is this: sometimes when I would have one of those days, I would actually sit down and write out what I did that day.  I mean EVERY.  LITTLE.  THING.  And then I would go down the list and put a check mark next to each thing!

Ha!  I showed THAT day!  I really did accomplish something!  I am not in a time warp!  I will not wake up and repeat this day!  (Okay, maybe I will…but eventually something different will happen…I might even fix dinner!)

So has anyone reading this ever done that?  Am I the only “Type A” home-schooling mom who, at least occasionally, needs to see a nice, neat list with a row of check marks next to it?  Anyone?

I am DEFINITELY a checklist Type-A personality. I struggle on the days where I’ve done SO much, yet my “to-do” list is still full… glad for the days I can get the “to-do” list checked off!

I totally hear you! I am such a list person. If you could see my kitchen table right now – I have a list of general household/family stuff that needs to get done, I have several lists of website-related objectives, over by the phone is the list of stuff I needed to get done over the weekend (I did accomplish most of it!)

I HAVE TO have lists or I would never remember the hundred-and-one things that need to get done in regards to household stuff as well as keeping up with the activities of all my kids. And yes, I still LOVE being able to check things off!

haha… yup. I had to sit down and purge the pile of lists growing next to
my keyboard just last night. Most of them were completed, but a few needed
to be held on to – I just merged all the “undone” tasks to a new list! 🙂

I think you and I were separated at birth! 😉

  • I have never done that before, but I think I might give it a try! Stopping by from the Hip Homeschool Hop!

  • Stopping by to say “Hi” from the Hip Homeschool Hop!
    Have a blessed day!

Stopping by fro the Hip Homeschool Hop! This was too funny! I never thought about doing this, but I like this idea. :o)

    Joy, blsdmommy, and Tiffany:

Thanks for stopping by from the Hop! I love the hop and have met so many great moms, especially from the chat on Twitter last month.

Glad you enjoyed the post…it definitely helps sometimes to actually write down what you accomplished, on a day when it seems like you’ve accomplished nothing! Those “mommy days” (the days when our kids just need us to “be” more than to “do”) are just as important as the days when we get loads of laundry done and cook a wonderful, nutritious dinner and delve into the intricacies of fractions!

Have a great day and thanks again for stopping by!

Sue: I so appreciate you hosting the Hop. It’s my “support group!” 🙂

And laundry is one of those never-ending things. I have been heard to say a hundred times (at least) in my house, “I just did all the laundry, where did all these dirty clothes come from?!” I think it’s a physics thing. Some kind of black hole thing. Laundry just never ends.

  • Sue

Check marks on a list bring me great joy!!! Although I must admit that the laundry is the LAST thing that gets checked off my list every week. 🙂

Thanks for joining the Hip Homeschool Hop every week. We just love you there!

    Blessings,

  • This is why I like workbooks. If my kids can make it X pages through their books first thing in the morning….I can handle little daily disasters that inevitably come with more *aplomb*.

  • Anonymous

    “Aplomb” – great word!

Yes, workbooks can definitely help out on those days when life seems to be getting in the way.

Glad you stopped by, CNut. Hope my readers take the time to check out your blog too!

  • I really need to try this when I have one of THOSE days! Thanks for sharing this Anne. 🙂

    • Anonymous

Glad you enjoyed it Rachel.  Even when I’m not having “one of those days,” I still have my lists all over the place.  I admire those people that can use a Blackberry or Smartphone or whatever.  I am so old-school.

      🙂

  • Ohh lately I have been having too many of THOSE kind of days….

    • Anonymous

Sorry to hear that!  I had a particularly rough week myself.  But I ascribe to the Scarlett O’Hara philosophy of life: tomorrow is another day!  😉

  • Anonymous

Ahhh…a kindred spirit!  I think a “time warp” is a good analogy by the way!

  • Anonymous

Glad to be of help!  I am definitely a list person and while I don’t know how many times I utilized this tactic I do know it was more than a couple times!

Thanks for coming over from the SITS site.  I appreciate all the support!
